RED Collective: Paul Nicklen | Sea Legacy

Growing up in an Inuit community on Baffin Island, Paul Nicklen fell in love with the rich ecosystem that surrounded him in the Canadian Arctic. From a young age, Paul knew that he wanted to be able to share the wonders of this unique, and often unseen, region with the rest of the world.

After getting his degree in Biology, Paul began traveling to the polar regions to collect information about the species and ecosystems currently in peril due to climate change. He quickly realized that while the scientific method of collecting data is a vital piece of the story, the way to truly get individuals to emotionally connect to the issues at hand is through evocative imagery. Paul turned to photography to help bring awareness to the problems currently affecting the remote areas of our world.

Together with fellow marine biologist Cristina Mittermeier, Paul founded the SeaLegacy Foundation—a collective of visual storytellers working on behalf of our oceans. Each photographer’s work is designed to transport viewers into the habitats they’re capturing and inspire each person to take action in preserving our planet. Every excursion they take has the same purpose: bring the oceans to everyone, and the issues of the oceans to everyone.
